Carbon Trust – Tiverton School

Background

The Carbon Trust was keen to identify the value of ‘smart metering’ enterprises and commissioned a study using EMT technology in Tiverton School in Devon – a secondary school with 1000 students. Like most schools or enterprises, this school had no way of effectively monitoring its energy and water consumption.

Installation

An EMT configuration was installed without any disruption to normal school business.

Energy savings identified

As a result of the installation, it was discovered that a major fault in the school boiler was causing major wastage. The system demonstrated that the boiler could be optimized to commence at 6.00 am.

Results

Annual water cost saving was 7,884 cubic metres, saving £20,000 and 3,469 kg CO2 per annum. Annual gas saving was 216,000 kWh, worth £3,456 and 41,000 kg of CO2 annually.
The total cost of the original meter reading system was £5,075, and the additional transmitter cost £180. The system has paid for itself in three months on water savings alone.
